Hungarian Kifli Cookies

Instructions:

  1. Mix the dough:
In a large bowl, combine flour, ground nuts, powdered sugar, vanilla sugar, and salt. Add the softened butter and mix until a smooth dough forms. Wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 30–45 minutes.
  2. Shape the cookies:
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Pinch off small portions of dough and roll into ropes about 3 inches long. Shape each into a crescent (like a “C”).
  3. Bake:
Place crescents on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the edges are just starting to turn golden. Do not overbake.
  4. Coat while warm:
Mix the powdered sugar and vanilla sugar for coating. While cookies are still warm, gently roll them in the sugar mixture.
  5. Cool and serve:
Let cool completely on a rack. Store in an airtight container — the flavor deepens after a day or two!

💡 Tips:

  • You can substitute ground almonds or hazelnuts if you prefer.
  • For a gluten-free version, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour mix.
  • These freeze well — perfect to make ahead for holidays!
