- 2 tbsp oil or lard
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1โ2 tsp sweet Hungarian paprika
- 300 g (10 oz) smoked sausage (like kolbรกsz), sliced
- 500 g (1 lb) sauerkraut, rinsed slightly if too sour
- 1 tsp caraway seeds
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 bay leaf
- 1โ1.5 liters (4โ6 cups) water or light broth
- 150 ml (ยฝโโ cup) sour cream
- 1 tbsp flour (optional, for thickening)
- Optional: 1 tsp hot paprika or chili flakes for spice
