Shlishkes (Hungarian Potato Dumplings)

Here’s a traditional recipe for Shlishkes 🇭🇺 — soft Hungarian potato dumplings coated in sweet, buttery breadcrumbs.
They’re similar in texture to Italian gnocchi but served as a dessert or sweet side dish.

Ingredients

For the dumplings:

  • 500 g (about 1 lb) starchy potatoes (Russet or Yukon Gold)
  • 200–250 g (1½–2 cups) all-purpose flour (amount depends on potato moisture)
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ tsp salt

For the coating:

  • 100 g (1 cup) plain breadcrumbs
  • 50 g (¼ cup) unsalted butter
  • 2–3 tbsp granulated sugar
  • Ground cinnamon (optional, to taste)
